Annual General Meeting, Banquet and Paying Homage Ceremony to Old Geologists


MGS is going to held its 6th AGM and Banquet in the evening of 23rd January 2010 at Excel Treasure Hotel, Shwegondaing, Yangon. The first Paying Homage Ceremony to Geologists older than 70 will also take place in the same occasion. This year's AGM shall include election for new executive committee for next two successive years.

 

Geotechnical Engineering Development of MGS

To promote the geotechnical engineering education and to develop geotechnical and engineering geological research, the MGS formed a Geotechnical Engineering Committee on 19th June 2009. The committee became a principal consultant of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, and offered 3-month Geotechnical Engineering Course (Level 1) for young geoscientists in 2nd October 2009 until 15th January 2010 in Department of Irrigation (Yangon Head Office). On the same date of closing ceremony, second batch of the course was opened in the same place.


Geotech Training

Professor Watanabe from Geosphere Research Institute of the Saitama University of Japan visited and delivered lectures to Geotechnical Engineering trainees during the last week of November 2009. With management of the MGS, professor visited Department of Irrigation in Nay Pyi Taw and some construction sites. MGS received understanding and agreement to collaborate with GRI for the engineering development in Myanmar.

Workshop on Ore Deposit Models in SE Asia

Professor Khin Zaw from Center of Excellence in Ore Deposits of the University of Tasmania, who was a staff from University of Rangoon, delivered a workshop on "Ore Deposit Models in SE Asia" on 2nd January 2010 in MES Building, Yangon. Old and new comrades on exploration and mining geology specialization attended and free discussions were made to be in touch with new ideas and current trends in ore geology.

With first Myanmar geology professor in university abroad, his colleagues: Mrs. Takayuki Manaka and Zaw Naing Oo also presented their works in the same occasion.



JMGS second issue

Second issue of the Journal of Myanmar Geosciences Society has been published in early of August 2009. This issue, namely Volume 2, No. 1, is consisted of five technical papers and a Presidential Address on the development of geology specialization in Myanmar: a brief overview. Articles are:

  1. Foraminifera special blooming in the Myanma Mid-Tertiary Formations (Chit Saing)

  2. First record of Late Silurian conodonts of the Linwe Formation, Ywa-Ngan Township, Shan State (South) (Maung Maung and Aye Ko Aung)

  3. Mineralogical investigation of refractory gold ore of the Kyaukpahto Mine, Myanmar: implications for recovery process (Ye Myint Swe and Cho Cho Aye)

  4. Correlation of shallow seismic data with drilling results in Tanintharyi offshore areas (Than Htun)

  5. A study of the fossil orientation in the Pan Laung Formation near Monggwe, Myitthar Township (Myint Thein)

In AOGS2009 with Earthquake Committee and EOS


With Thai Geologists

President Dr. Win Swe, jointly with members of the Myanmar Earthquake Committee attended AOGS2009 (Sixth Annual Meeting of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society) in Singapore from 11 to 14th August 2009. With the financial support of Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), four presentation concerning Seism tectonics and earthquake potential of Myanmar.

Myanmar Geologists Society Singapore

Recently, geologists in Singapore have organized a scientific, technical and social team for the future of Myanmar geologists in Singapore. The MGSS "Myanmar Geologists Society of Singapore" was registered as the official procedures of the Singapore government, and the third Myanmar community in Singapore. Dr Win Naing, a Patron of the team going to be MGSS, delivered a technical talk to seniors of MGS and MES, and geotechnical consultant committee of MGS, on 30th May 2009. More technical talks are going to be organize by these societies in both countries in the near future.

Myanmar Delegation to the GEOSEA2009

President Dr. Win Swe, accompanied with U Nyunt Htay and U Soe Thura Tun, joined the Eleventh Regional Congress on Geology, Mineral and Energy Resources of Southeast Asia "GEOSEA 2009" held from 8 to 10 June 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team, with another Myanmar colleagues abroad, presented the following contributions during the occasion. Myanmar delegates attained a general agreement for future collaboration and technical exchange within the region. A regional meeting for IYPE (International Year of Planet Earth) was also held during the occasion.
