Collaboration with Chinese Academy of Sciences

After having mutual agreement and signing MOU with two institutes under Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) vis. Institute of Geographical and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Beijing and Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIG) in “Workshop on Resource and Environment towards Sustainable Development in Great Mekong Region” in October 2010 in Kunming, a group of Chinese Professors visited Myanmar for the meeting on further collaborative work with MGS and a brief tour to Nay Pyi Taw, geological exposures along the Yangon-Mandalay Express Way, and the Sagaing Hills during the period of 11th to 16th June, 2011.

Field Survey to Hinthada – Gwa Areas

Having field excursions in Myanmar’s geologically interesting areas by senior members since its foundation in 2004, a recent survey was conducted on 23rd to 25th February 2011. The team, led by Dr. U Thein, Past President of the MGS, includes Drs Htay Thwin (Dagon), Htun Naing Zaw (YU) and Win Min Oo (EYU) with MGS seniors like U Kyaing Sein, U Than Htun, U Nyunt Htay, U Than Htut, U Cho Oo and U Soe Thura Tun.

U Saw Ngwe Khaing from Hinthada University acted as field conductor and U Kyaw Zwar Naing (Taunggyi) and Lin Thu Aung (WYU) participated as field assistance. Reminiscing rocks and structures of Rakhine Yoma and the Kan Thar Yar shore line, the team have had brainstormings and joint studies, and received ideas for future work. Department of Irrigation in Kayin Chaung Dam helped the society for convenience of the excursion.

Geotechnical Engineering Development of MGS

3-month Geotechnical Engineering Course (Level 1) for young geoscientists has been a year round. Six successive courses were organized in Department of Irrigation (Yangon Head Office). During the last batch, U Shwe Zin Oo, Survey Consultant in Singapore and former teacher from Yangon University, offered a special talk on Engineering Survey on 16th July 2011 and Dr. Yu Maung, Geotechnical Consultant in Shwedaung Co. Ltd. and former teacher from YTU, conducted special lecture on 22nd July 2011.

MGS delivered a new technical course, namely Advanced Surveying Couse, in Department of Irrigation Head Office in Yangon from last week of June 2011. The six-week course, equipped with modern survey instruments, has been led by experts from Amigos International survey consultant company and MGS’s experienced survey instructors.

Geotechnical Engineering Committee, that has been formed to promote the geotechnical engineering education and to develop geotechnical and engineering geological research, act as a principal consultant of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and the Department of Hydropower Implementation of the Ministry of No. 1 Electric Power, to provide geology and seismicity information necessary for the development of dams.

During March 12th to 17th, MGS Geotech team visited Shweli Hydropower Project Site north of Momeik and studied structural elements and degree of activity of Shweli Fault in this area. Also, from May 12th to 19th, a geological field trip was conducted to Yazagyo and Manipur Dam Sites in Kalemyo area, western central Myanmar. Deterministic and Probalistic Seismic Hazard Assessment with other geological data were provided to be applicable for construction of dams.

Lecture and Workshop on Economic Geology

On 11th September 2010, Mr. Douglas Kirwin and Dr. Andrew Mitchell joined Myanmar geologists at MGS Special Talk on Economic Geology as one of the Society of Economic Geology Lecture Series. Mr. Kirwin delivered lectures on gold deposits of the Cloncurry, Australia and Haenam, S Korea, and Dr. Mitchell presented about Modi gold deposit and Monywa copper deposit of Myanmar. Mr. Kirwin donated series of Economic Geology to the library of the MGS.

Professor Khin Zaw from Canter of Excellence in Ore Deposits of the University of Tasmania, who was a staff from University of Rangoon, delivered a workshop on "Ore Deposit Models in SE Asia" on 2nd January 2010 in MES Building, Yangon. Old and new comrades on exploration and mining geology specialization attended and free discussions were made to be in touch with new ideas and current trends in ore geology.

With first Myanmar geology professor in university abroad, his colleagues: Takayuki Manaka and Zaw Naing Oo also presented their works in the same occasion.

Annual General Meeting, Banquet and Paying Homage Ceremony to Old Geologists

MGS and Myanmar geologists held its 7th AGM and Banquet in the evening of 22nd January 2011 at Excel Treasure Hotel, Shwegondaing, Yangon. The second Paying Homage Ceremony to Geologists older than 70 was taken place in the same occasion.

This year's AGM included election for the placement of new CEC, U Lin Myint. MGS declared its appreciation to two persons and an organization for their sincere services to the Progress of Research and three seniors for their lasting and devoted services to the Progress of Research. Central Executive Committee reported its work during 2010 in Annual Report.

Special Talks in MGS

On 8th January 2011, Dr. Khin Maung Latt, retired lecturer of the University of Yangon, currently works in Soil Investigation Pte. Ltd., Singapore, delivered lectures on –
(1) Tectonic evolution of Asian continental margin during Mesozoic and early Tertiary in Myanmar Region
(2) Understanding the rock for engineering purposes

MGS proudly presented the lectures in Geotechnical Training Hall of Irrigation Department (Yangon Office) so students, members, researchers and Irrigation Dept personnel could learn and discuss in the occassion.
